To optimize this process, the underlying technology is crucial. Many traditional controllers on the market use phase angle control via a thyristor or triac to regulate power. This works like a classic wall dimmer: the technology chops a piece out of the clean sine wave of the alternating current every time.

This abrupt chopping into the sine wave causes major practical difficulties. It causes harmonic distortion and high-frequency interference on the electricity grid.
