Be Future-Ready with an Energy Management System

These are the signals that smart energy control is becoming the new standard

Smart energy control is no longer an exception. What once began as technology for the pioneers among us is rapidly growing into a necessary standard. Just look at the discussions being held at the highest international levels on this topic. In this blog, we summarise the most important signals that demonstrate why an energy management system is becoming the new norm for installers and end-users alike.

From European legislation to grid congestion and the rise of dynamic tariffs: all signs point towards a fundamental shift in the energy landscape. The energy management system is no longer a 'nice-to-have'. Instead, it is becoming the beating heart of every sustainable energy solution. The first signals are already evident.

European Regulations Stimulate Smart Control

For instance, the European Commission is heavily focused on flexibility within the energy system. Through policies concerning the Energy Efficiency Directive, the Clean Energy Package, and the recent updates to the EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive), energy management is being increasingly explicitly named as a requirement or strongly recommended function in new builds and renovations.

Smart energy control is viewed as a prerequisite for absorbing grid peaks. Energy management systems are encouraged for installations such as charging stations, solar panels, or heat pumps. Furthermore, member states must actively facilitate the use of digital energy tools and stimulate the implementation of energy management systems.

We are already seeing that legislation is shifting from controlling generation to controlling consumption. An energy management system is indispensable for this.

Grid Congestion Necessitates Flexibility

Grid congestion is a daily reality in many regions. Exporting solar energy is restricted, there are waiting times for new connections, and the network is creaking under the growing demand.

An energy management system offers a solution in such cases. Energy is consumed during periods of surplus. Through smart distribution, peak loads are prevented, and local supply and demand remain balanced. Additionally, devices are automatically switched on based on grid capacity.

The grid operator desires nothing more than for users to adapt to the grid's load. An energy management system makes this possible.

Dynamic Energy Tariffs Demand Smart Control

Dynamic contracts are rapidly gaining popularity. Where consumers and businesses were once bound by fixed or variable tariffs, they can now benefit from price fluctuations in the energy market daily or even hourly.

However, this only works if one knows when electricity is cheap and can adjust devices accordingly. An energy management system makes a difference here by, among other things, automatically switching devices based on hourly prices, intelligently charging or discharging batteries, and timing energy export during price peaks. The energy management system thus translates price signals into smart actions.

Devices and Energy Management Systems

While controlling devices used to be a challenge, that is no longer the case. Heat pumps, charging stations, boilers, batteries: more and more products are prepared for control via an energy management system. Manufacturers of inverters are also integrating energy management system functionalities or simplifying the connection for them.

This means there are fewer technical barriers to installations, and we can expect quicker implementations. And as an installer, that's where you make the difference.

Greater Control Over Energy

With an energy management system, customers gain greater insight into their energy consumption and generation. This helps them avoid surprises on their energy bill and provides clarity on their energy situation, all while achieving the best possible return from their installations.
