Energy communities and commercial storage: how Italian SMEs reduce fixed costs

The Italian energy landscape is changing rapidly. With the end of massive traditional building subsidies (such as the Superbonus), the focus of businesses has shifted toward concrete, long-term solutions. The new frontier is represented by Renewable Energy Communities (Comunità Energetiche Rinnovabili – CER) and the optimization of industrial consumption through advanced storage systems.

1. Maximizing returns in energy communities (CER)

In Italy, CER regulations allow businesses and citizens to share locally produced energy. The success of this model depends on the ability to synchronize production and consumption.

• The role of storage: Systems such as the Sungrow PowerStack or the SolarEdge CSS series enable SMEs to store excess solar energy during the day. This energy is then made available to the community during peak moments, which maximizes the shared energy incentives provided by the GSE (the Italian energy authority).

2. Peak shaving: reducing the fixed components of the energy bill

Italian enterprises face grid tariffs that are among the highest in Europe. Many SMEs pay significant amounts based on their peak power demand.

• The solution: By using storage solutions from SolarEdge, a company can "shave" these peaks (peak shaving). The battery kicks in during moments of maximum production activity. This prevents exceeding the contracted power threshold, which drastically reduces monthly fixed costs on the energy bill.

3. Operational leasing: premium technology without high upfront investment

Increasingly, installers in Italy are offering operational leasing (noleggio operativo) for commercial battery systems. This allows companies to install premium hardware from SMA or Sungrow without a heavy initial investment. The system is essentially paid back through the direct savings generated on the energy bill.
