Maintenance plan for home batteries
For safe, efficient and long-lasting performance
Batteries are a key player in the shift towards smarter, more sustainable energy use. To fully benefit from their capacity, reliability and lifespan, proper maintenance is essential. We’re here to help with this practical maintenance plan:
1. Periodic inspection
Visual check
Regular visual inspections help detect issues early and prevent damage. Check the battery for visible irregularities, such as housing damage, discoloration, signs of leakage or loose cables. Pay extra attention to connection points: signs of corrosion may indicate moisture issues or connector wear. Early action helps prevent unsafe situations or performance loss.
Monitoring via BMS or app
Most home batteries are equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS) or connected to an app that displays key data. Use this tool to monitor charging and discharging cycles and check whether the battery operates within expected ranges. Watch for anomalies in temperature or voltage, as these may signal technical faults or cell aging. Early detection helps extend the battery’s lifespan.
2. Cleaning
Keep the environment clean
The installation environment affects performance and safety. Keep the area around the battery free of dust and dirt, as this can block heat dissipation. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating. The location must also remain dry to avoid corrosion and short circuits. A clean and stable environment contributes to safe and reliable operation.
Regular dusting
A clean battery runs more efficiently and lasts longer. Dust and dirt can build up on and around the housing and restrict heat flow. Regularly use a dry microfiber cloth to dust the surface. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth, but make sure it’s only lightly moist, with no visible droplets. Never use water, soap or harsh cleaners, as they can damage the housing or cause short circuits.
3. Software updates
Keep the software up to date
Performance and safety depend not only on hardware but also on the system’s software. Check regularly for firmware or software updates. These can improve efficiency, add new features, enhance safety and ensure better compatibility with inverters and monitoring systems.
Use the manufacturer’s app
Most manufacturers offer updates via the Battery Management System (BMS) or a dedicated app. This allows you to see at a glance whether an update is available and install it easily. Keeping the software up to date ensures your battery continues to operate optimally.
4. Extra tips for maximum performance
Temperature management:
Home batteries perform best at stable temperatures. Keep the environment between 10°C and 30°C. Extreme cold or heat can reduce efficiency and cause long-term damage to the cells. Ideally, install the battery in a frost-free, well-insulated space with sufficient ventilation.
Avoid overloading and deep discharge:
Use the battery within the limits set by the manufacturer. Constant overloading, such as providing high power output over longer durations or deep discharging, shortens the lifespan significantly. Try to keep the battery within its mid-capacity range and avoid full discharge, unless specifically allowed by the manufacturer. This helps maintain internal components and extends battery life.
Check the connections:
Perform an annual inspection of the battery’s connections to ensure everything is in proper condition. Ensure cables are securely fastened, show no signs of wear and are free of oxidation or damage. Loose or damaged cables can cause voltage drops, faults or even fire hazards. This is where you, as an installer, come in. A thorough inspection, including reading out error codes and taking preventive measures, ensures the system remains safe and reliable.
