The EU Battery revolution: Everything you need to know about the Battery Passport
There is much talk about the "Battery Passport," but what does it actually mean for your daily work? The EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) is now in effect. The goal is simple: making batteries the most sustainable and safe in the world. For you, this means the "Black Box" finally opens.
Whether you install Enphase, Huawei, or SMA, every system over 2 kWh will have its own digital passport.
What is the Battery Passport exactly?
It is a digital identity card accessed via a QR code. For you as an installer, you gain a legal right to access BMS data.
You will instantly see:
The State of Health (SoH).
Full maintenance history and safety protocols.
Detailed repair and disassembly instructions.
The Timeline
February 2026 (Now Active): Carbon Footprint. Manufacturers must disclose the total CO2 impact of the product.
August 2026: New Labels and Symbols. Batteries must display symbols for lifespan, capacity, and chemical composition.
February 2027: The Digital Battery Passport. Full digital access via QR code becomes mandatory.
Why this makes your work easier
The gap between B-brands and our premium brands (SMA, Growatt, Huawei) becomes clear. You can prove safety and durability. Furthermore, the EU mandates repairability; you can replace components instead of scrapping the whole unit.

FAQ:
What info will be on the 2026 labels? Manufacturer details, battery type, production date, capacity, and chemistry.
Who handles these stickers? The manufacturer is responsible. You only need to ensure compliance for products bought after August 2026.
Is this only for new models? Yes, for batteries placed on the market after the specific deadlines.
Who is responsible for the passport? The manufacturer or importer. Buying from ESTG means our brands handle the creation for you.
What if I import myself? If you buy from outside the EU, you are legally the "producer" and responsible for all data and recycling.
Is the QR code already mandatory? Mandatory by February 2027, but new labeling starts in August 2026.
Does this apply to small batteries? The passport is for systems >2 kWh. Smaller batteries have labeling rules but no individual passport.
